Welcome!

Welcome everybody to my first student e-Portfolio. I created this page for my Behavioural Studies class at Monash University as a reflection of the professional identity I wish to assume once I complete my studies in 2010. Some of the information that I have included in this portfolio include my professional goals, experiences, and certain selections of work that illustrate my capabilities amongst other things that reflect my person.

If you have any queries or would like further information regarding specific parts of my portfolio, please do not hesitate to email me at: mskam5@student.monash.edu.au or dinibeanie@gmail.com.

Thank you!

About Me

My full name is Made Sriandini Kamayana, but throughout my years of schooling in order to make it easier for my teachers and classmates, it has been shortened to Andini. I am currently an international student at Monash University completing my Bachelor of Arts and double majoring in Behavioural Studies/Sociology.

I am originally from Bali, Indonesia even though I have only lived there for 3 years from when I was born. Still, I am more than proud to call it my home. I have lived in Bangladesh for a total of 7 years, the Philippines for 8 years, and so far have lived in Australia for approximately 3 years. Despite it being hectic, I would not change my experience of growing up in different countries for anything.

I am a big fan of music, with which I cannot get through a day without, and I am particularly fond of the Hip-Hop/R&B genres. I also have a great appreciation for dance and really truly wish that I could dance better.

Once I finish my degree at Monash, I aim to enter the field of social work, in particular working with youths, and hopefully receiving a Masters degree in the upcoming years from a graduate school in Social Work in the United States.

Future Goals

The following goals are the culmination of the past 6-months of planning, as I am now nearing the end of my final year at Monash University:

  • Graduate from Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts (Behavioural Studies/Sociology) Degree by June 2010.
  • In 2010, begin an internship/volunteer position, or more desirably a paid-working position in perhaps one of the following organisations:

OR work through various community level organisations.

  • Once I obtain one year's work experience, by the beginning of 2011 (February), begin my Masters in Social Work (MSW) degree in the United States. Graduate Schools of interest:
-Boston College: Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW)

Reflection: These goals are my short-term, shifting into long-term goals, for the next 3 years of my life. It is a requirement for Masters programs in the United States to have at least one years work experience, whether it be a paid/non-paid internship or volunteer work, and it must be in the field of study. I am hoping that by working with the above organisations (AASW, the Brotherhood, Salvos) I will be able to gain as much hands on experience as possible, and learn the 'tricks-of-the-trade'. Thus enabling me to gain entry into a good graduate program. In turn, I hope that once my Masters degree has been completed, it will give me advantage in achieving the desired working position that I wish for in the field of social work--in particular in the work with youth.

Academic Record

These transcripts are the unofficial records from Monash University's Web Enrolment System (WES). The transcripts are separated into two files: one for the courses taken at Monash College & Single Unit Enrolments in Arts for a semester. The other is for the courses that have been taken from 2008, when I was finished with Monash College completely, up until the present day.

Reflection: The classes that I took during my 31/2 years at Monash University are under the majors of Behavioural Studies (BHS) and Sociology (SCY). My transcript also shows the minor sequence I completed in Communications (COM). Despite my major sequences not being in the field of Social Work itself, the classes that I took are very closely related and can technically be seen as an 'extension' of the field as it falls under the social sciences. From these courses I have learnt how sociologists interpret the world through various theories and research methods.

University Units

Below are a list of units that I took during my course at Monash University from 2006 till the present day. The list of units include the ones that I took when I began my Behavioural Studies course at Monash College (prior to entering the University itself).

Reflection: When I originally began my studies at Monash University I was planning to undertake International Relations as my major as I was very interested in working for organisations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and so on. However, as I started taking Behavioural Studies classes I found that I was more passionate about that than the political aspects of the world. As the years progress in my studies, the more focused I have become in my chose field of study and I believe that through the classes above, I have learnt how sociologists reflect upon different issues present in the world today. I do believe these units have provided me with a good base for further studies and hands on work experience in Social Work.

Artefacts

The two artefacts presented below represent some of the works that I have done in high school and in university.

Senior Project

At the American International School/Dhaka, the Senior Project is a mandatory class that all students in their final year of high school must take. Students are given the opportunity to choose any topic they like in relation to one of the prevalent issues in Bangladesh. At the end of the year, students present their topic in a 15-minute presentation given to an audience of peers and a panel of guest experts.

Elves Sub-Culture

This was a group project undertaken for this particular class: BHS3000 Digital Selves. The aim was to use our online identities located in-world on Second Life to collaborate and to achieve the end result of a presentation. The challenge was to only meet through either instant messaging services (such as MSN) or through the use of our in-world identities which we created in order to participate in class. The group I was in chose to focus on the Elves sub-culture in Second Life, and my task in the group was to create the end product (the link above).

Reflection: The first piece of work was my greatest accomplishment in the final year of school. It symbolizes the beginning of my interest in social work and it is eventually what led me to pursue an education in this field of work (or at least a similar field of work) in university. I believe this piece shows the stability of my mindset, as once I am determined to accomplish something, I go for it wholeheartedly. I believe the second piece of work demonstrates my ability to work as a team, even though no face-to-face communication or real-life interaction was exchanged between me and my team members (as per the requirements of the assignment). I believe it truly demonstrates the ability to overcome any 'obstacles' should it arise.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

As I have grown up as an international student in countries of South & South-East Asia, I have not had as many opportunities as most students living in Western countries do to gain paid-work experience. Living in 3rd world countries however, has provided me with a lot of access to gain experience in volunteer work. I aim to greatly build my part-time work experience for my CV in order to ensure better job placement in the future.

Reflection: As with any other resume, mine reflects my educational background, previous work experience, volunteer work experience, references, and my capabilities. Although I do not have ample experience in the paid-work force, I have a good amount of experience in volunteer work, which I believe is just as important; especially in the field of work that I wish to go into. However, through both my experiences I have found that my volunteer experiences have taught me more valuable lessons in team work, and have been, on the whole, more fulfilling as generally the work done in volunteer work is to assist a cause/organisation that support those in need.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Fat Kids has become a very big part of my life. Here is a little information about what Fat Kids are and what we do:

The family at Fat Kids love working with like-minded people in the fashion, art, music and entertainment industries to create a more inventive environment where everyone can come together as one. We throw events on the regular that bridge the gap between all these mediums. Challenging and pushing the boundaries to create a new space where fashion, art, music, toys, design and everything related to the creative culture can meet and share similar ideologies, like the Simply Bread Collectors Series.

Fat Kids are well known for our cross promotions, innovative street & guerrilla marketing, strategic brand placement and the clever use of electronic media. Expressing our thoughts and ideas in a slightly distinctive and quirky manner is what we do best.

Reflection: Despite my extra-curricular activity having nothing to do with my studies or what I will be doing in the future, I believe it has helped me become a more open person and I have found that through this team, it is easier for me to communicate with people I have just met; whilst before I would find it too difficult to try. Although I believe I have always been good at working as a team, I find that through this family I have improved my communication skills, and I have been able to contribute more to help improve our methods of promotion and our co-operation as a team together.
